The B.Sc. degree study program

The curriculum in the department preserves the tradition of Joshua Margolin, a pioneer in the teaching of the Life Sciences in Israel. Margolin held that the teaching of Biology in the field is just as important as teaching in the classroom and laboratory.
The studies take 3 years, and students have the option to continue their studies toward a teaching diploma for one additional year. Graduates obtain a B.Sc. degree in Biology from the University of Haifa, and (optionally) a Teaching Diploma in Biology.

The course of study in the Department of Biology and Environment at the University of Haifa - Oranim is unique in its atmosphere and teaching methods. When you choose to study Biology at the University of Haifa, Oranim campus you are choosing:

1. To study in small groups. We insist on small study groups where you can participate and contribute actively. You will not be "lost in the crowd". At our department the contact with lecturers is direct, ongoing and immediate. Such contact will help you meet your course requirements and broaden your horizons.

2. To enquire. From the first year you will be exposed to the problems involving the relationships between the organism and its environment. The Department of Biology and Environment at the University of Haifa - Oranim has an extensive field-teaching network, which is the most comprehensive of any Israeli university. As a first-year student, you will participate in weekly excursions to a variety of natural habitats and learn about the inter-relationships between plants, animals, microbes and their physical and chemical environments. The primary goal of these excursions is to stimulate you to enquire into the interaction between living creatures and their surroundings. The tools to deal with these problems will be acquired during the overall course of your studies.

3. To actively participate in research carried out at the department. We offer you to participate in such projects, closely mentored by a faculty member, as part of your elective studies. This will provide you with a unique opportunity to acquire hands-on research skills in the life sciences. Successful final projects have been published as scientific articles in international and local journals.

4. To be exposed to up-to-date Israeli and international research in the life and natural sciences through participation in the departmental seminar program. Our department is the only one in Israel to open its department seminars to undergraduate students.

5. To choose from a wide range of elective courses during your third year. We offer courses in all biological disciplines, including cell biology, biochemistry, genetics, microbiology, physiology, zoology, botany and ecology.

6. To combine Biology studies with parallel studies for a Teaching Diploma in Biology for junior and senior high schools. The Teaching Diploma studies are held in relatively small groups, which allow for close contact between faculty and students.

Graduate studies towards M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees

There are ample opportunities for graduate research in our department, both at the M.Sc. and the Ph.D. levels. Graduate degrees are granted by our sister departments, Evolutionary and Environmental Biology and Human Biology at the University of Haifa. Our graduate students conduct their research in one of the research labs at Oranim Campus, and take courses at the University of Haifa main campus, on Mt. Carmel (20 minutes away).
